The Trumpet Ploughing Match

October 5, 2009

Today we went to The Trumpet & District 66th Ploughing match held at The Green Farm, Felton, Herefordshire. With the ground too dry at The Hawthorns to do any work with the Direct drill it was a good excuse to see how the ploughs were coping. In addition, we were keen to see Colin Bowen in action. Colin is a good friend from Craven Arms, Shropshire who also runs Mickey Miller’s Playbarn. Chris had promised for ages to go and see him compete in a ploughing match but had never found the moment until today, so a quick telephone call and a spur of the moment decision meant we found ourselves in Felton trying to spot Colin amongst all the other tractors ploughing on the site.

There were a range of classes featuring many different styles of ploughing including Tractors and Ploughs manufactured before 1959, Tractor and Hydraulic Plough manufactured after 1964 and before 1972, and Vintage one Furrow Plough with Agricultural/Horticultural plough to name but a few.

Colin had entered the Reversible Plough Section, last week he had been in Zabreh, Czech Republic at the 26th European Reversible Ploughing Championships chasing a good place (he came third overall, winning one of the classes) and his aim is to represent England in the 2010 World Ploughing Contest to be held in New Zealand.

In addition to the tractors and machinery there was a Horse Ploughing Section which demonstrated a number of heavy horses tacked up in their finery.
